Emergency Dentistry: Wisdom Teeth Removal in Chicago

Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure to extract wisdom teeth that are causing pain or discomfort. Wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth that erupt in an adult usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people never develop wisdom teeth. For some other people, wisdom teeth erupt normally and do not cause any problems. Unfortunately for others, wisdom teeth do not erupt normally causing a lot of pain.
Impacted wisdom teeth
What does it mean when your dentist mentions that your wisdom teeth are impacted? It simply means they are trapped underneath your jawbone. It could also mean the teeth erupted at an awkward angle.
Problems with impacted wisdom teeth
Complications that can come from impacted wisdom teeth include;
- Pain
- Food trapping
- Infections
- Gum disease
- Tooth decay (especially if the tooth partially erupted)
- Causing damage to a healthy tooth nearby
- Causing the formation of a fluid-like sac around the tooth
- Blocking orthodontic treatments for teeth straightening
If you have wisdom teeth but currently don’t have any of the above complications, your dentist may still recommend extraction to avoid future problems.
Some people live with wisdom teeth their entire lives especially when the dentist recommends so. Your dentist could recommend leaving the wisdom teeth as they are if you have no complications and removal can cause teeth shifting.
At Pristine Pearls, we examine your wisdom teeth for any complications before recommending their removal. However, for emergency cases where patients complain of pain and discomfort, we quickly remove them.
